Introduction :Full Form Of Book
Definition of Computer
The full form of a computer does not completely describe its properties. It is defined as an electronic device that takes input from the user, performs arithmetic/logical operations and provides output or results. However, a computer is far from being just a calculating machine. A Computer is an electronic device that makes our lives simpler! From browsing the Internet to typing documents, storing data and playing games, a Computer is a necessity. Without this machine, there would be no advancement of technology and life itself might come to a halt.
Objectives of A Computer
Once you know the full form of computer and its definition, you must now understand its uses. The objectives of the computer will help understand what the computer is required for and why it is important:
- A Computer has the ability to do complex calculations at high speed.
- It helps us to store information and obey instructions to generate a desired output.
- Computers help us with the use of simple logical operations for processing of information.
- Computers can communicate with another system to retrieve or store information and process it.
- With the help of a computer, we can acquire highly accurate information and data from various sources.
- Using application softwares in a computer enables detailed comparison of data.
Functions of a Computer
The full form of computer, does not describe what the computer actually does. Besides calculations and computation, the basic functions that are performed by a computer are:
Input
A computer does not work on its own, which is why it requires a user to perform various functions. The input function allows a computer to accept data input from the users through input devices like a keyboard, mouse etc. The data input function is the first step in the working of a computer system. Without any input data, the computer cannot perform any other function or give out the desired result.
Data Processing
After the data has been taken in by the input devices of a computer, it gets processed through the CPU (Central Processing Unit). This is the main function of the computer system, and the CPU plays a vital role. The data input given to the computer has to be processed, manipulated, or organized in such a way that it finally displays the desired result to its user.
Because the CPU performs the main function, it is also called the ‘brain’ of the computer. It is responsible for performing all the computer functions, given the command. The CPU functions in such a way that it allows for data to be stored, processed and retrieved back so that the output units can display whatever is required by the user. A CPU contains:
- Control Unit (CU):Â The full form of CU in computer is the Control Unit. The control unit of a computer is responsible for carrying out the input/output memory function and all other operations required for data processing.
- Arithmetic Logical Unit (ALU):Â This unit performs the arithmetic and logical operations required for the CPU to perform its data processing function. It performs mathematical operations like addition, subtraction etc. and logical operations like selecting, greater than or less than functions etc.
- Memory Unit (MU):Â Temporary storage of information/data is required by the CPU to perform the data processing. The memory unit allows temporary data storage to store, process and retrieve the information to perform the function.
